Skiathos

The island of Skiathos belongs to the Northern Sporades group of islands (along with Skopelos, Alonissos, Skyros and some smaller islands around them), and the area is popular for sailing holidays, as it is not so exposed to the meltemi wind as the Cyclades. Skiathos is the nearest of the group to the mainland coast and is situated 41 miles east of the town of Volos.

The island is covered with pine-trees and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. There are three harbours on the island and a small marina for yachts on one of the two islets called Tsougries that lie across the main harbour, on the south-east coast.

The capital and main harbour of the island , also called Skiathos, was built in 1830 on two low hills. It is the hometown of one of the most important Greek writers, Alexandros Papadiamantis, whose house is now a museum. The most interesting sight on the island is Kastro (the Castle), the former capital of Skiathos, built on a rock on the north coast to protect the inhabitants from pirate invasion. It is now in ruins, but the breathtaking view is worth the climbing.

The closer you get to the town, the more crowded the beaches; if you are looking for something more quiet try the beaches on the north coast, which are unfortunately more exposed to the wind. On the island you will also enjoy fresh fish and other delicacies at the tavernas and you will find the nights very lively and exciting.
